Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh defeat Republican challengers

AKRON, Ohio – Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh each handily won re-election Tuesday, based on early unofficial results. Shapiro, a Democrat who has led the county since 2016, beat out Republican challenger John Chapman, 58% to 42%. Shapiro is Summit County’s first female executive, and previously served for 10 years on County Council, including three years as council president. Walsh, also a Democrat, defeated Republican Michael Washington, 61% to 39%. She has been prosecutor since 2000. Two other Democratic county incumbents were also victorious Tuesday: Clerk of Courts Sandra Kurt beat Republican Mike Rasor, 56% to 44%, and Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise defeated Republican Jay Iula, 63% to 37%. Kandy Fatheree, a Democrat, beat out Republican Shane Barker to win the race for Summit County Sheriff. Sheriff Steve Barry, a Democrat, is retiring at the end of the year, and crossed party lines to endorse Barker.
